It’s no surprise that asphalt shingle is the most popular roofing material in the United States. Between asphalt’s affordability, versality, and durability, it’s difficult to go wrong with investing in a shingle roof. But did you know there are three main types of asphalt shingles, all with different benefits? Read on to learn about the main shingle types and what style is right for you and your home.
3-Tab Shingles
Also known as “strip shingles”, 3-tab shingles are the most affordable and basic shingle option on the market. They are made from a single layer of asphalt and appear flat with a simple, slate-like aesthetic. Because these shingles are lightweight and made from one layer instead of two, they do tend to blow off easier than other roofing material types, but still have a lifespan of 18-20 years.
Dimensional Shingles
Out of all shingle materials, dimensional shingles are most popular amongst Michigan homeowners. Dimensional shingles are made of a double asphalt layer, making them more durable than the basic 3-tab shingles. Typically, dimensional shingle roofs last between 25-28 years and come with a 30-year warranty. As this roof type costs ~20% more than a 3-tab shingle roof, it will last 10+ years longer and protect your home better.
Luxury Shingles
If you’re looking to go with a premium roof for your home, luxury shingles are the way to go. Luxury shingles have a multi-dimensional aesthetic – like dimensional shingles – and have maximum durability and weather protection. These shingles also provide the most realistic look and feel of wood shake and slate roofing styles. Along with the luxury aesthetic comes a higher cost; expect to pay two times as much for luxury shingles than the basic 3-tab shingle roof. Since luxury shingle roofs last upwards of 30 years, we think it’s worth it.
Asphalt Shingle Recap
To recap, any asphalt shingle roof you see in your neighborhood is likely made with one of these shingle types: 3-tab, dimensional, or luxury:
- 3-Tab – Most affordable shingle option but has less versality and increased risk of blowing off during winter storms.
- Dimensional – A good durable shingle option due to its manufactured double layer but adds additional weight to your roof and home.
- Luxury – Most expensive shingle material on the market but more affordable than slate/cedar alternatives and provides the most durability and versality out of all shingle options.
